Scorpio's most well-known totem is that of the scorpion, but we also have the potential to become the Risen Phoenix, which represents a higher vibration of Scorpio.

Welcome to today’s New Moon in Scorpio. As a New Moon inaugurates a new monthly lunar cycle, this signals a fresh start that will be greatly enhanced by releasing your baggage (Sun conjunct Moon in Scorpio, with the added weight of Mercury and Venus in Scorpio). What do you need to drop in order to move into joy or peace, or whichever vibration you’re longing for?

Because the Scorpio vibe is so strongly attuned to deep connection, one way to move into this lunar portal and to fully draw on its energy is to examine your most intimate relationship. If your mind flashed to a lover you’ve forgotten the most crucial relationship you have, which is the one with yourself. Part of coming into yourself as a full and whole Being is to develop an intimate exploration of who you are at every level. This is the strength of Scorpio season. If you’re entangled with another person, that relationship is fuelled by the energy that emanates from deep within you. Not knowing who you are at your core disables you from experiencing the sumptuous feast offered to us at the Buffet Table of Life. You can get by, but you may never feel satiated, no matter how much you eat (or have sex, or earn, or buy or…)

And now that we’re immersed in Scorpio’s x-ray vision, ‘getting by’ simply isn’t enough. To reap the benefits of this Scorpio New Moon, go within and contact that place that is vulnerable. Ironically, that’s where your strength is. When we have a major dose of Scorpio medicine, we learn that covering up our vulnerability – painting a smile on our faces when we’d rather have a good cry – is actually what weakens our force. The paradox of Scorpio energy is that your vulnerable and tender part that you try to mask with bravado is actually the source of your greatest strength. People can always smell a cover-up, whether it’s happening in the corporate-ruled governments or in your personal life. They respond to what they pick up at an energetic level, in spite of what you may present. And when what you say or do is out of alignment with what you truly feel, people sense an ulterior motive – which leads to mistrust, which can lead to alienation. And, in that sense it’s you that are alienated from your self.

Use the powerful energies of Scorpio’s rulers: Mars and Pluto to dig deep and love yourself in spite of any hang-ups you may have that something is terribly wrong with you. Be courageous and enter the tunnel – even if it’s new territory – and become friends with the dark. That’s how the Light eventually gets in.

In aid of this process, Mars in Leo makes a square aspect (90 degree angle) to Mercury and Venus in Scorpio. This is a type of cosmic nudge to get real about where you’re holding onto control in your most personal relationships. It can easily manifest as a lot of bravado and tough talk (Mars square Mercury), particularly if you or someone in your world is strongly attached to only one way of doing or perceiving things. The square aspect is an inner spur that makes us uncomfortable enough that we feel compelled to speak or take some kind of action that will shift things around to the way we want. And that will likely involve friction.

Some people abhor friction, while others thrive on it. In actual probability, it’s closer to the truth that we all have a simultaneous fascination with and repulsion for friction. But we do need some friction in Life. As a pilot friend once explained to me, without the friction of an airplane’s wings against the wind, a plane can’t ascend. And isn’t that what we’re trying to do – ascend? So now, Venus and Mars – the signature planets of erotic love – are rubbing each other the wrong way. And there’s a certain irony, in that Venus is currently a guest in Mars’ territory of Scorpio. But these two planets are engaged in a somewhat erotically tense way with each other, and this will play out in our lives to some degree.

For instance, one person likely wants to egg the other one on, to get a rise out of them so as to force an issue to potential breaking point. It may be unconscious, but this is often how humans operate. We pick a fight, we may not even know why, but we’re spoiling for a good shouting match. It’s that classic let’s fight ‘cuz it feels so good to make up afterwards routine. But you need to tune into what really gets accomplished in that type of encounter, other than a cathartic release of sorts. When Mars is on the scene we’re dealing with how much power we grant our individual egos to do our bidding. Let’s face it, the ego likes to run the show, and takes great pride in doing so when in the sign of Leo.

But at the same time Leo is ruled by the Sun, which brings to light the Higher Self – which is infinitely greater than the ego. Actually, Sun and Mars are in mutual reception (each is in the other’s sign), so the symbolism reveals that they’re working as a team to embolden and encourage us to go deeper beyond the needs of ego. What that means for us is that the ego must become a servant to the Higher Self (Sun), and not the other way around. So, for instance, the Mars side of your persona may insist on being the self-appointed leader, but the Mercury and Venus portion of you may resist stepping into that role for fear (Scorpio) of messing up and looking bad. Or your Mars side acts out for more attention, while your Mercury and Venus side cringes at the thought of being in the spotlight.

On a deeper level, the reality is that these three planets, which are seemingly at odds with each other, are a stimulus to connect us with Universal Energy as our fuel source, rather than relying on the limited resources of the ego. Again, Mars in Leo is ruled by the Sun – which is currently transiting Mars’ sign of Scorpio, where Mercury and Venus currently reside. Scorpio connects us to the deepest dimensions of Life and to our interiors, where (mystics will tell you) the Universe really resides. Draw up from your roots and down from the skies in order to use this tension in a creative, rather than hurtful way.

And be patient with yourself and others. The kind of deep changes we require take time and gentle perseverance. Thankfully, we have a benevolent sixty degree angle from Saturn exalted in Libra to Mars as a reminder that everything happens in due time (Saturn), which may be different from your own desired schedule (Mars). This planetary pairing also eases strain by gently reminding us that decorum is preferable to bar brawls when you have to make a point.

As always, if you could use some help navigating the current cosmic stream please be in touch with me. I’m happy to put things into a context that makes sense for you. Blessings as you go along this week!
